3× World Cup Hosts — El Tri Chase a First Quarterfinal Since 1986

Mexico become the first nation to host the World Cup three times (1970, 1986, 2026). Despite 8 consecutive Round of 16 exits, Javier Aguirre’s El Tri — backed by a fortress atmosphere at Estadio Azteca — aim to finally break the “curse of the fifth game” and reach the quarterfinals on home soil.

GROUP A INFO

About Group A

Mexico are seeded first in Group A as a co-host nation, with the enormous honour of playing the tournament’s opening match against South Africa at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City — the only stadium to have hosted two World Cup finals (1970, 1986). Their opponents are South Korea (Asia’s giant-killers, led by Son Heung-min), Czechia (dangerous European contenders), and South Africa (also co-hosts, making a historic first appearance since 2010). Mexico play two games at Estadio Azteca and one at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara — all three on home soil, with some of the most passionate crowds in world football. El Tri have been eliminated at the Round of 16 in eight consecutive World Cups, and ending that streak on home turf would be one of the tournament’s great stories.
