First World Cup Since 2010 — Bafana Bafana Return to the Stage

South Africa return to the World Cup for the first time since they hosted in 2010, having qualified ahead of Nigeria. Co-hosts of the 2026 tournament, they open against Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca — a repeat of the famous 1–1 draw that opened the 2010 tournament. Led by coach Hugo Broos, Bafana Bafana aim to advance past the group stage for the first time in their history.

GROUP A INFO

About Group A

South Africa are seeded fourth in Group A — the only co-host nation not expected to top their group. They open the entire tournament against Mexico at the legendary Estadio Azteca, mirroring the famous opening game of the 2010 World Cup which ended 1–1 in Johannesburg. Their second match is against Czechia at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta before a decisive Matchday 3 showdown with South Korea at Estadio BBVA in Monterrey. South Africa have never advanced past the group stage in three previous World Cup appearances (1998, 2002, 2010), but the expanded format means a strong third-place finish could still be enough to progress. The squad is composed largely of South African Premier Soccer League players, with Lyle Foster (Burnley) and Percy Tau as the most recognisable names internationally.
