The Bundesliga is the premier professional football league in Germany and is one of the most watched and most attended competitions in world football.

Founded in 1963, it replaced a fragmented regional championship system with a single national division in which the best clubs in German football compete over a 34-match season.

Played under the umbrella of the Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL), the Bundesliga currently features 18 clubs that are fighting for the right to lift German football’s most prestigious piece of silverware, the Meisterschale.

The league attracts the highest average matchday attendance of any football league on earth, regularly filling its stadiums with over 40,000 fans per match.

The Bundesliga also holds a special place alongside Europe’s top competitions: the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, and Ligue 1.

It has produced European champions, World Cup-winning stars, and some of the game’s greatest managerial minds.

The question of who wins the Bundesliga each year is of great importance. Not just domestically, but throughout European football.

The Bundesliga champion earns automatic entry into the UEFA Champions League group stage, significant prize money, and a place in the pantheon of German football history.

Winning the title means lifting the Meisterschel, a round silver plate first awarded in 1949 whose name translates as “master’s bowl.”

This article contains the complete, fully updated list of Bundesliga winners from 1963 to 2026. Every champion, runner-up, manager, and total points over all 63 seasons.

Whether you want to know who won the first Bundesliga or who won the most recent championship, you’ll find it all here.

The First Bundesliga Champion

FC Köln became the first Bundesliga champions by winning the inaugural 1963–64 season under manager Georg Knöpfle.

The club finished six points clear of runners-up Meidericher SV, marking the beginning of Germany’s modern professional league era.

Coached by Georg Knopfley that season, Köln finished with 45 points, six points ahead of Meidericher SV (later renamed MSV Duisburg).

That season’s league consisted of 16 clubs, selected from regional divisions to form Germany’s first unified national top flight.

Köln’s victory was historically significant for reasons beyond the scoreboard.

It represented the successful launch of a professional league system that Germany had long delayed, compared to England, Spain and Italy.

The Bundesliga was born out of the need to professionally organise football in West Germany following its 1954 World Cup victory, and Köln recognised the new competition in its first season.

Karl-Heinz Thielen was the top scorer for Köln that season with 16 goals.

However, Hamburger SV’s Uwe Seeler topped the overall Bundesliga scoring charts with 30 goals.

This is a stunning total that is testament to the attacking football played in the league’s early years.

Current Bundesliga Champion (2025–26)

Bayern Munich are the current Bundesliga champions, having secured their 34th title under manager Vincent Kompany in the 2025–26 season.

The Belgian, who joined the club ahead of the 2024–25 season from Burnley, won consecutive championships in his first two campaigns.

The 2025–26 campaign was historically notable. Bayern finished with 89 points, 16 points ahead of second-placed Borussia Dortmund.

With Harry Kane winning the Bundesliga Golden Boot for the second consecutive season with 36 goals, they scored 122 league goals.

Breaking their own Bundesliga single-season scoring record of 101 goals, set in 1971–72 and standing for 54 years.

Bayern Munich were crowned champions on 19 April 2026 with four games to spare after a 4–2 home win over VfB Stuttgart.

Bayern Munich’s 11-Year Streak (2012–13 to 2022–23)

From the 2012–13 season to the 2022–23 season, Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga for eleven consecutive years.

This streak stands as the longest consecutive title run in the history of any of Europe’s top five leagues.

It began with Jupp Heynckes delivering the treble in 2012–13 and continued under Guardiola (3 titles), Ancelotti (1), Heynckes again (1), Kovac (1), Flick (2), Nagelsmann (1), and Tuchel (1).

They proved their mettle with a 91-point season in 2012–13, and a treble under Flick in 2019–20.

The streak ended in 2023–24 when Bayer Leverkusen, under Xabi Alonso, went undefeated the entire season, six points ahead of Stuttgart, which had 73 points.

Bayern, who finished third in 2023-24, has responded by winning the title in the following two seasons.

Other Notable Streaks

Borussia Mönchengladbach won three successive titles from 1974–75 to 1976–77. Bayern Munich won three in a row from 1972–73 to 1974–75 and again from 1984–85 to 1986–87, and from 1998–99 to 2000–01.

Borussia Dortmund retained the title in 1995–96. These earlier streaks pale beside Bayern’s 11-year run, but each reflected genuine period dominance.
