The Black Stars — Ghana Return for a Fifth World Cup Seeking Quarter-Final Redemption

Ghana make their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance, still haunted by the ghost of 2010 — when Luis Suárez’s infamous handball on the goal line, and the resulting missed penalty, denied them a historic semi-final. Drawn into Group L with England, Croatia, and Panama, the Black Stars play in Toronto, Boston, and Philadelphia. Mohammed Kudus leads an exciting squad under new coach Carlos Queiroz, with Jordan Ayew, Antoine Semenyo, and Ibrahim Osman providing firepower as Ghana dare to dream of reaching the last eight for the first time since that heartbreaking night in Johannesburg.

GROUP L INFO

About Group L

Ghana make their fifth World Cup appearance, drawn into Group L with England, Croatia, and Panama. Their group-stage journey spans three cities: Toronto hosting the opener, Boston the second match, and Philadelphia the final group encounter. The opener against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto is Ghana’s most winnable group game and a chance to build early momentum. Their Matchday 2 clash against England at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough is the group’s marquee fixture, while the finale against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia could be a winner-takes-all battle for a knockout spot. Ghana’s finest hour remains the 2010 quarter-final run, when Asamoah Gyan’s goals fired them to the last eight — only for Luis Suárez’s infamous handball and the resulting missed penalty to deny them a place in the semi-finals in one of the most heartbreaking moments in World Cup history. Mohammed Kudus was the standout performer at Qatar 2022, scoring twice as Ghana exited at the group stage. Now under new coach Carlos Queiroz, Ghana arrive with Jordan Ayew, Antoine Semenyo, and Ibrahim Osman supporting Kudus — and with 2010 still unfinished business burning in their hearts.
