Liverpool and Manchester City occupy very different places in English football history, even though both now sit among the country’s most decorated clubs.

Liverpool’s success stretches back to the start of the 20th century, built on 18 First Division titles, six European Cups and a reputation forged under managers such as Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley. Manchester City’s story is different.

The club won occasional trophies across the 20th century, including an early European trophy in 1970, but its transformation into a serial winner is a modern phenomenon, dating almost entirely to the period after 2008.

Because these two clubs have taken such different paths to the top of English football, comparing their trophy counts is genuinely useful.

It shows how much of Liverpool’s advantage is historical, how quickly Manchester City has closed the gap, and where each club’s strengths actually lie once the numbers are broken down competition by competition.

It also explains why different websites report different totals for both clubs. Some sources only count “major” trophies and leave out the Community Shield.

Others use inconsistent methodology between the two clubs, or fail to update totals after each new season.

This article avoids that problem by applying one clear methodology to both clubs, verified against Liverpool FC’s official honours record, Manchester City’s official honours record, and the competition organizers themselves: the Premier League, the FA, the EFL, UEFA and FIFA.

This piece covers only official senior men’s first-team honours. Friendly and pre-season trophies, individual awards, youth honours, academy titles, reserve-team competitions and women’s team honours are excluded, because they are not part of a like-for-like senior men’s trophy comparison.

All figures below are current through the end of the 2025/26 season, including Manchester City’s FA Cup and League Cup wins that season and Liverpool’s 2024/25 Premier League title. Arsenal, not Liverpool or Manchester City, won the 2025/26 Premier League, and that title is not credited to either club here.

Who Has Won More Trophies?

Liverpool have won more trophies than Manchester City. Under the methodology used in this article, Liverpool have 68 official senior men’s trophies. Manchester City have 38. That is a gap of 30 trophies.

The biggest differences by competition:

  • League titles: Liverpool lead 20 to 10 overall, though City lead 8 to 2 on Premier League titles specifically.
  • FA Cup: Level, 8 to 8.
  • League Cup: Liverpool lead 10 to 9.
  • Champions League: Liverpool lead 6 to 1.
  • Europa League/UEFA Cup: Liverpool lead 3 to 0.
  • European Cup Winners’ Cup: Manchester City lead 1 to 0.
  • UEFA Super Cup: Liverpool lead 4 to 1.
  • FIFA Club World Cup: Level, 1 to 1.

Every figure above reconciles with the competition-by-competition tables later in this article.

Why totals vary: This article counts Community/Charity Shields listed as wins on each club’s official honours record, including shared Shields.

Liverpool Trophies

Top-Flight League Titles: 20

Liverpool have won the English top-flight title on 20 occasions, a joint English record. Eighteen of those came in the old First Division, spanning 1900/01 through to 1989/90.

The other two came in the Premier League era: 2019/20 under Jurgen Klopp, which ended a 30-year wait for the domestic title, and 2024/25 under Arne Slot, sealed with matches to spare in his first season in charge.

FA Cup: 8

Liverpool have won the FA Cup eight times: 1965, 1974, 1986, 1989, 1992, 2001, 2006 and 2022. The first came under Bill Shankly against Leeds United, and the most recent arrived in a penalty shootout win over Chelsea.

League Cup: 10

Liverpool’s 10 League Cups are the most of any English club: 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1995, 2001, 2003, 2012, 2022 and 2024. The 2024 final, a 1-0 extra-time win over Chelsea, was Klopp’s last trophy before leaving the club.

Community Shield / Charity Shield: 16

Liverpool have won the Community Shield, formerly the Charity Shield, 16 times. Several of these were shared: when the fixture ended level, the FA historically declared both clubs joint holders for that year, and both clubs’ official honours lists credit it as a win.

This article follows that same convention for both Liverpool and Manchester City, counting a shared Shield as a win for each participating club rather than splitting it or excluding it.

European Cup / UEFA Champions League: 6

Liverpool have won Europe’s premier club competition six times, more than any other English club: 1976/77, 1977/78, 1980/81, 1983/84, 2004/05 and 2018/19.

The first three came under Bob Paisley, the fourth under Joe Fagan, the fifth was the “Miracle of Istanbul” under Rafael Benitez, and the sixth came in Madrid under Klopp.

This record is the single biggest reason Liverpool leads the all-time trophy count, since no other English club has won the competition more than twice.

UEFA Cup / Europa League: 3

Liverpool have won the UEFA Cup, the competition that later became the Europa League, three times: 1972/73, 1975/76 and 2000/01. The 2001 final, a 5-4 win over Deportivo Alaves, is remembered as one of the most dramatic European finals ever played.

European Cup Winners’ Cup: 0

Liverpool have never won the Cup Winners’ Cup, a competition for national cup winners that UEFA discontinued after the 1998/99 season.

UEFA Super Cup: 4

Liverpool have won the UEFA Super Cup four times: 1977, 2001, 2005 and 2019, following three of their European Cup wins and their 2001 UEFA Cup win.

FIFA Club World Cup: 1

Liverpool won the FIFA Club World Cup in 2019, beating Flamengo in the final in Qatar, months after winning the Champions League.

Intercontinental Cup: 0

Liverpool have never won the old Intercontinental Cup, the pre-2000 predecessor to the FIFA Club World Cup that pitted the European champion against the South American champion.

Liverpool’s total under this article’s methodology: 20 + 8 + 10 + 16 + 6 + 3 + 0 + 4 + 1 + 0 = 68 trophies.

Manchester City Trophies

Top-Flight League Titles: 10

Manchester City have won the English top-flight title 10 times: 1936/37, 1967/68, 2011/12, 2013/14, 2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22, 2022/23 and 2023/24. City did not add a further title in 2025/26, which was won by Arsenal, so that season is not counted here for either club.

FA Cup: 8

Manchester City have won the FA Cup eight times: 1904, 1934, 1956, 1969, 2011, 2019, 2023 and 2026. The most recent came in the 2025/26 final, a 1-0 win over Chelsea at Wembley through an Antoine Semenyo goal, which brought City level with Liverpool on FA Cup wins.

League Cup: 9

Manchester City have won the League Cup nine times: 1970, 1976, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2026. The 2025/26 final was won against Arsenal, extending City’s dominance of the competition through the 2010s and into the 2020s.

Community Shield / Charity Shield: 7

Manchester City have won the Community/Charity Shield seven times: 1937, 1968, 1972, 2012, 2018, 2019 and 2024, using the club’s official honours record and the same shared-Shield convention applied to Liverpool above.

European Cup / UEFA Champions League: 1

Manchester City won their first and only Champions League in 2022/23, beating Inter Milan in the final in Istanbul, completing a historic treble that season.

UEFA Cup / Europa League: 0

Manchester City have never won the UEFA Cup or the Europa League.

European Cup Winners’ Cup: 1

Manchester City won the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1969/70, beating Gornik Zabrze in the final. This remains City’s only European trophy outside the 2022/23 Champions League.

UEFA Super Cup: 1

Manchester City won the UEFA Super Cup in 2023, beating Sevilla, off the back of their Champions League win.

FIFA Club World Cup: 1

Manchester City won the FIFA Club World Cup in 2023, completing a full sweep of every trophy available to them that calendar year.

Intercontinental Cup: 0

Manchester City have never won the old Intercontinental Cup.

Manchester City’s total under the same methodology: 10 + 8 + 9 + 7 + 1 + 0 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 0 = 38 trophies.

Liverpool vs Manchester City: League Titles

Liverpool’s 20 top-flight titles include 18 First Division championships won between 1900/01 and 1989/90, plus two Premier League titles in 2019/20 and 2024/25.

Manchester City’s 10 top-flight titles include two First Division titles, 1936/37 and 1967/68, plus eight Premier League titles won between 2011/12 and 2023/24.

Separately comparing only the Premier League era shows a reversed picture: Manchester City lead 8 titles to Liverpool’s 2, reflecting City’s dominance of English football’s most recent decade and a half.

Liverpool’s European history is significantly deeper than Manchester City’s, both in total trophies and in the number of different competitions won. City’s sole advantage in this category is the 1969/70 Cup Winners’ Cup, a competition UEFA discontinued in 1999.

Liverpool vs Manchester City: Club World Titles

CompetitionLiverpoolManchester City

Both clubs have won exactly one FIFA Club World Cup: Liverpool in 2019 and Manchester City in 2023. Neither club has ever won the old Intercontinental Cup, the pre-2000 European vs South American club competition that the FIFA Club World Cup effectively replaced.

Liverpool vs Manchester City: Last 10 Years

Over the last completed 10-year period, the 2016/17 season through 2025/26, Manchester City has substantially outproduced Liverpool in raw trophy count.

Liverpool’s haul in that window includes one Champions League (2018/19), two Premier League titles (2019/20, 2024/25), one FA Cup (2021/22), two League Cups (2021/22, 2023/24), one UEFA Super Cup (2019) and one FIFA Club World Cup (2019).

Manchester City’s haul in the same window includes six Premier League titles, one Champions League (2022/23), four League Cups, three FA Cups, one UEFA Super Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup, plus the 2022/23 domestic-and-European treble.

City’s recent trophy rate has been extraordinary by any English standard, driven by Guardiola’s long managerial tenure and consistent squad investment. Liverpool remains far ahead across the full history of both clubs, but over this specific 10-year window, City has been the more successful side.

Liverpool vs Manchester City: Major Trophies

For this section, “major trophies” is defined as an analytical category covering the top-flight league, FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League/European Cup, Europa League/UEFA Cup, European Cup Winners’ Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and Intercontinental Cup.

This is not an official UEFA or FIFA classification, and it deliberately excludes the Community/Charity Shield, which some outlets treat as a curtain-raiser rather than a major honour.

Liverpool vs Manchester City: Major Trophies (Our Definition). The relative picture is similar to the full trophy count, but the absolute numbers are lower for both clubs because the Community Shield is removed.

Premier League Era: Liverpool vs Manchester City

Since the Premier League began in 1992/93, the picture flips from the all-time table. Manchester City has won 8 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cups, 6 League Cups, 3 Community Shields, 1 Champions League, 1 UEFA Super Cup and 1 FIFA Club World Cup in that span.

Liverpool has won 2 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cups, 6 League Cups, 4 Community Shields, 1 Champions League, 1 UEFA Cup (in the pre-Europa League era), 2 UEFA Super Cups and 1 FIFA Club World Cup.

City’s rise to become the Premier League’s dominant club came primarily during the 2010s and early 2020s, powered by sustained investment beginning in 2008, a settled recruitment approach, and the appointment of Pep Guardiola in 2016.

In pure Premier League-era terms, City’s trophy count now sits close to, and by some counts ahead of, Liverpool’s.

Klopp vs Guardiola Trophies

Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool (2015-2024)

Across nearly nine years in charge, Klopp won one Premier League title (2019/20), one Champions League (2018/19), one FA Cup (2021/22), two League Cups (2021/22, 2023/24), one UEFA Super Cup (2019) and one FIFA Club World Cup (2019).

Pep Guardiola at Manchester City (2016-present)

Across a longer tenure than Klopp’s at Liverpool, Guardiola has won six Premier League titles, one Champions League (2022/23), three FA Cups (2018/19, 2022/23, 2025/26), five League Cups, one UEFA Super Cup (2023) and one FIFA Club World Cup (2023), including the 2022/23 treble.

Guardiola’s overall haul is larger, but he has also had more time in the role than Klopp had at Liverpool. Any fair comparison needs to account for tenure length rather than comparing raw totals alone.

Klopp’s achievement of ending Liverpool’s 30-year league drought and delivering a sixth European Cup came in a shorter managerial window than Guardiola’s spell at City.

Final Verdict

Liverpool holds a clear all-time lead over Manchester City, 68 trophies to 38, once every official senior men’s honour is counted using the same methodology for both clubs.

That advantage comes almost entirely from two sources: 20 top-flight league titles compared with City’s 10, and six European Cups compared with City’s one.

Manchester City’s rise since 2011 has been extraordinary by any historical standard. City has already caught Liverpool on FA Cups, narrowed the League Cup gap to a single trophy, and matched Liverpool’s FIFA Club World Cup count. City also holds the sole advantage in the discontinued Cup Winners’ Cup.

The two clubs remain level in FIFA Club World Cups and FA Cups, while Liverpool continues to lead comfortably in league titles, League Cups, Community Shields, the Champions League, the Europa League/UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.

Liverpool’s story is one of sustained success across more than a century. Manchester City’s is one of rapid, concentrated achievement within roughly 15 years.

Both are true at once, and neither cancels the other out. Recent form favors Manchester City; all-time history still favors Liverpool.
