GROUP A INFO

About Group A

Czechia are seeded third in Group A, having qualified through the UEFA playoff by beating Denmark on penalties. They open the tournament against South Korea in a late-night kickoff at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, before heading to Atlanta to face South Africa — a match that looks very winnable. Their final group game is the biggest: Czechia vs. Mexico at Estadio Azteca, one of the most intimidating grounds in world football, before a roaring home crowd. Led by West Ham’s Tomáš Souček and Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick, Czechia have a squad capable of qualifying. A positive result in either of the first two fixtures could take the pressure off the Mexico game. Czechia competing as Czechoslovakia reached the World Cup Final in 1934 and 1962 — this current generation will be hoping to match some of that legendary pedigree.
